Words of Wisdom:  Coming in from the cold

 

Government surveyors came to Ole’s farm in the fall and asked if they could do some surveying. Ole agreed and Lena even served them a nice meal at noon time.  The next spring, the two surveyors stopped by and told Ole, “Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this bad news in person instead of by letter. Ole replied, “What’s the bad news? The surveyors stated, “Well, after our work we discovered your farm is not in Minnesota, but is actually in South Dakota!” Ole looked at Lena and said,” That’s the best news I have heard in a long time, why I just told Lena this morning, I don’t think I can take another winter in Minnesota.”

 

We may not be able to change our situation or do anything about the weather, but like Ole we can have a change of attitude. One’s attitude affects the way one lives.

 

Many folks are not happy with the blizzard conditions, but many young children are thrilled with the school cancelations. They love the snow, while others find the snow and cold making life difficult. The fact is we can’t change the weather, but instead of being bitter, we can celebrate that we have places to go out of the cold. Instead of being upset over slippery sidewalks, we can give thanks that we have the ability to shovel the white stuff. Instead of grumbling about delays, we rejoice that we are able to offer help for those who can’t get out on their own. As St. Paul stated, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13

 

For St. Paul the “him who gives me strength” was his Savior, Jesus Christ!  I pray that you will find warmth in the knowledge you have a Savior who loves you and watches over us whether we are sweating in a desert or trying to stay warm in the cold Midwest.
