Chappy’s corner: “Who cares?”

The man answered the door and the pollster greeted him by asking, “Sir, we are taking a poll and wanted your opinion on the ignorance and apathy in this country.” The man responded, “Well first of all, I don’t know what you are talking about and secondly I don’t care!”

That man’s answer might reflect the attitude of many folks this week. After months and months of campaigning many of us are sick and tired of it.  With all the political mumbo jumbo we may have become ignorant of the real facts and just don’t care anymore.  The truth is many of us are very glad the elections are over. We may not be happy about the results, but we are glad it is done and that life can go back to normal.

At the same time there were many folks who never did care. They didn’t take the time to even vote and that is truly sad.  It is sad that men and women have fought and bled to protect and preserve the freedom of people to cast their vote and so many don’t take the opportunity that has been won for them.  Sadly many just don’t care.

But there are those who do care.  This weekend we celebrate “Veteran’s Day” which honors those who are currently serving and those who have served in the military. These folks put on a uniform in order to go and fight to defend the freedoms of this land. They were willing to leave family, friends and their homeland to go to foreign lands to help others have the freedoms we have.  Their sacrifices remind me of another person who was willing to give up everything to help others because He cared, that one is Jesus.  As a Christian I believe that God cares for all of us and that God sent His only son Jesus in order to save us from sin and death.  Jesus once said, “No greater love is there than this, that one lays down his life for his friends.”  That is what Jesus did. He sacrificed his life to pay the price for our freedom.  He did it because He cared.

Now none of us could do what Jesus did, but all of us can still follow His example of caring.  We can show we care for others by taking the time to get involved in the lives of our children and family, to get involved in the issues of our communities and counties, and to show we care by taking an interest in the lives of others.  And when the opportunity comes to vote, we can show we care by casting our vote!

That’s just my thoughts from this SE corner of South Dakota!
